The area in which Hera is operational is not merely a geographic entity. Above all, it is the principal source of wealth, socially and environmentally. We must therefore respect it and provide safeguards to ensure its future.
Hera therefore believes its commitment to responsible management of natural resources must be put into practice on a day-to-day basis by improving corporate performance, adopting increasingly efficient technologies and promoting renewable energy sources.
WE SAID WE WOULD...
- Create a fully functioning detection, monitoring and reporting system for the greenhouse gas emissions of authorised plants
-
Implement the project for detection, monitoring and reporting system for waste-to-energy plant and landfill greenhouse gas emissions
-
Maintain levels of investment in special grid maintenance and hookups
-
Draw up and implement a plan to curb water grid losses by 5% in 2008 (vs 2004)
- Collaborate with ATO environmental authorities and municipalities on projects to foster separate waste collection. Achieve an average group quota of 31.4% by 2005
- Raise the quota of material recovered at the Akron and Nuova Geovis selection and separation plants from 62% (2004) to 65%
- Complete the authorisation procedures for renovation of the waste-to-energy plants in Forlė and Rimini to raise their capacities to up to 49% of all collected waste, by 2009
- Obtain ISO 14001 environmental certification for Hera SpA and the Local Operating Companies. Integrate existing ISO14001 certificates in the new group ISO14001 certificate.
- Finalise the EMAS regulatory project over a period of 5 years to cover the entire waste treatment and disposal cycle
WE HAVE...
- Fulfilled the requirements of the Kyoto Protocol (see par. 11.9)
- Conducted a study of waste-to-energy plant greenhouse gas emissions and we shall extend this study to landfill emissions (see par. 11.9)
- Made investments in the water and gas service (water grid and treatment) in 2005 basically as in 2004 (unchanged scope of reporting). Investments in sewerage systems have increased (see par. 3.1)
- Implemented the water loss research and reduction plan, and submitted it to the ATO environmental authorities. The plan envisages investment in grid modelling, section analysis and instruments for loss detection (see par. 11.6)
- Achieved 30.9% separate waste collection in 2005. Excluding the Modena area, separate waste collection totals 31.7% (see par. 11.11)
- Achieved a 66.1% quota of materials recovered at the Akron and Nuova Geovis selection and separation plants (see par. 11.11)
- Completed the authorisation procedures for renovation of the waste-to-energy plant in Forlė. Authorisation for the Rimini plant is pending. (see par. 11.12)
- Project underway (termination by close of 2006) (see par. 1.6)
- Achieved approval for the EMAS regulatory project for the coming 5 years, regarding 53 disposal plants (see par. 1.6)
WE SHALL...
- Reduce use of landfill as a means of disposal for solid waste, while increasing separate waste collection and waste-to-energy treatment. Our objective is, by the close of 2009, to recover (by separate waste collection and waste-to-energy treatment) 85% of collected waste and to dispose of only the portion of non-separate waste that cannot be recovered as material or energy via landfill (following pretreatment, selection and biostabilization)
- Set guidelines for development of separate waste collection to reach 35% in 2007 and monitor implementation on the part of Local Operating Companies
- EMAS registration: obtain registration for 6 more waste treatment and disposal plants during 2006
- EMAS registration: extend Hera Ferrara EMAS registration to the integrated water service
- ISO 14001 certification: obtain certification for Hera SpA and the Local Operating Companies
- Formulate new procedures for disposal and treatment of sludge from wastewater treatment
- Extend the district heating service by selecting and implementing initiatives for heat recovery from renewable sources
- Set guidelines for collection of RAEE (rifiuti da apparecchiature elettriche ed elettroniche) (waste from electrical and electronic appliances)
- Promote initiatives for the production of energy from renewable sources and for reduced energy consumption
- Implement the water loss research and reduction plan: for 22% water loss in 2008
- Extend greenhouse gas emissions monitoring and reporting to all plants
- Reduce atmospheric emissions of company fleets (by conversion to methane gas, biodiesel, hybrid, etc.): the objective is to achieve 20% of the fleet consisting in low environmental impact vehicles in 2009
